Could be a bug, I see the same on occasions when either the sender or my phone is in a poor signal area.

Sounds like the phone is still logged into your son's iCloud account. Open Settings and look under iCloud to check. If it is still logged in, your son will need to log out as it asks for the password and it will delete all information on the iPhone pertaining to iCloud. It really needed doing...

Thanks for the suggestions Gail. It was indeed in magnification mode but alas the 123 button on the left plus the "q" and the "a" buttons don't respond despite toggling back to normal mode, but the shift button does. Anyway the dealer is providing a replacement phone on Monday....

I don't know anyone who locks the SIM. The usual passcode should protect the iPhone but of course, thinking out loud, not the SIM if that is pinched. Why turn it off at all, which invokes the lock? Then the SIM is protected if removed and you won't get the hassle.

Text message issues

Check to see if 'Text Message Forwarding' is switched on for your iPad. Also you could switch on 'Send Read Receipts' as you will get 'Delivered' and 'Read' under the iMessage. That is, of course, if you don't mind people seeing if you have read the message. And sometimes iMessage has the...

I have always had a problem with under-counting of steps no matter what device or app I've used. I have a Misfit Shine 2 that under-counts but nowhere near as bad as a Jawbone or any FitBit I've tried. My series 2 Apple Watch is usually close to what Moves X on my iPhone X reports. But I don't...

I did log out from iCloud and it did vanish from the list. The reset process took a while, like ten to fifteen minutes, but I'm sure it would have logged me out so it does seem to be simple. It is now ready to be set up again and is back in the box waiting for my friend to pick it up. I have no...

Seems the problem was a coincidence. We swopped my SIM into OH's phone and it worked with no problems... until my credit ran out :D (I'm on original PAYG). This failed to trigger my brain and we went off to see our tame Apple expert. Told her the process we'd gone through and she pointed out the...

 There were aspects of Ram that were fine, his knowledge was impressive; and there were other responses that were worse than the one that caused this initially, but it just got to a point where I was fed up of having to stress about what I was posting or being made to feel stupid. It was the...

I'm left handed and constantly frustrated by taking photos on my iPad which absolutely requires right handed operation. Why couldn't they have built in a simple reversal (flip) of the controls? Not a perfect answer, but I found this workaround in Apple discussions: Thanks Highmac. Nice idea...

Google Assistant on smartphone (the topic of the original post) came out top in an A.I. comparison. No coconut for Siri. Google Assistant running on a Smartphone remains the leader in number of questions answered, and in answering questions fully and correctly. Cortana came in a close second for...

Another endorsement for Tunnel Bear. If you download the App you get 500Mb free to use every calendar month which is enough to try out a ½ hour program. If you then wish to continue (and you only want to use it on an iPad) make sure you click on "for iOS only" the monthly subscription...
