Thanks, lougher. I eventually found a fix on another forum. Resetting Location and Privacy in iPhone>Settings>General>Reset fixed mine. Haven't tried the wifes yet.

Sorry I'm late to this. Yes, it's Assistive Touch which I have on my iPad and provides quick and easy access to the Control Centre (for some reason I found dragging from the top right corner often didn't work first time).

Thanks for the comments, both. I may continue to use the iPhone 5s for a while - the cracked glass is not really any trouble because I have Sellotape on the front which has held for two or three years already and seems to be fine practically speaking. No glass shards. Still fully intact and strong....
