Hi guys,
My trusty enormous 52x mains powered DVD/CD burner passed away the other day. Gutted. Had it a long time! Anyway, I still burn the odd CD and DVD so am looking for a replacement. It's not something thats used all the time, maybe a couple of times a month for burning or importing music.
Ideally I'd like an Apple external, but I'm not able to pay £79 for the luxury, and whilst second hand are cheaper, I don't think I'd trust buying one that's had a life prior to my ownership! So, does anybody have any recommendations at all? Doesn't need to be state of the art, doesn't need to be mains powered, just needs to be reliable!
Any recommendations welcomed! Dan

Do a quick search on Amazon for "usb dvd writer" (then I always pick Amazon as the seller because I'm not trusting). I have a Lite-on (like the black one at about £18) and it writes/reads CDs DVDs and DVD-RAM and has been good for years. Anything that you like the look of that specifies macOS in the blurb will do. Samsung or other brand. They are much of a muchness.

I have an LG DVD/CD superdrive that cost IIRC about £20.

These devices are run-of-the-mill. Apple simply charges more than others. There is absolutely no need to buy Apple's device.
LG, Toshiba-Samsung - whatever. Pay about 1/3 of a "SuperDrive".
I have the one made by Toshiba/Samsung.

I use a generic bare internal drive with a USB to SATA adapter. The adapter is a handy device for bare hard drives and it works just as well with big 'ol dvd drives too.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the feedback. I know that actually, these things are quite inexpensive but when you read the reviews online some can be so hit and miss I thought I'd ask...
Annnnyway. As it turns out, I've actually ended up with a second hand Apple SuperDrive. Not being on Facebook, I got my other half to stick a post out there to see if any one had a drive I could borrow for a few days until I replaced mine. By the time I'd posted this, someone had sent her a reply (although I was only told yesterday). A friend of mine had a Superdrive that he received for free when he purchased his iMac about 6 months ago. He unwrapped it and used it a couple of times, but it has sat in the box 99% of it's life-he bought a new car that had an SD card slot and Bluetooth for his music, so burning CD's was 'prehistoric' apparently. He let me have it for £30. I'm picking it up tomorrow, so I'm quite pleased with that.
Thanks for the replies-i'll be burning and importing those prehistoric items in no time!
