I just started on the Jan 2018 edition of Macworld. It mentions the 'root' vulnerability and how to change the root password (as a precaution against any future shenanigans), which seems a good idea. I started following the instructions, but at the step where it said change, I saw that root was not enabled. If it isn't enabled, it isn't vulnerable, is the logical thought. I left it like that.

Here is Apple's official page on enabling/disabling root and changing the password. Slightly different to Macworld's steps but I'm sure it is correct.
