Nothing to do with batteries and old hardware, this one is purely down to Intel.

Quote:
A major bug in Intel’s processors can’t be fixed via a firmware update, and will require an operating system patch across Windows, Linux and macOS platforms – and the bad news is that this software patch could slow down PCs potentially by up to 30%.

30% reduction of performance would pee me off somewhat. Of course, the quote is qualified with the scaremongering journalistic shock horror word "could", so time will tell.

Everything past Leo/10.7.x is 64 bit, Leo was 32/64 bit as I recall.

I wouldn't think a CPU firmware patch would require a certain OS, but knowing Apple ...

Apparently it isn't just Intel.

As far as Apple users go - quote:
Apple has reportedly partially addressed the flaw in its recent 10.13.2 macOS update, which was released to the public on December 6. Further tweaks will be added to the 10.13.3 update, which is currently in beta testing.

As you probably saw, not just Intel but AMD and ARM.

If I read it right, only old iPhones are at risk.

The iPhone 4S used the Cortex A9 in the Apple A5. The iPhone 4 and 3GS also used ARM-based chips that were vulnerable.

I doubt they'll get a patch.

Reuters:
"With Safari and virtually all other popular browsers not patched, hundreds of millions of iPhone and iPad users may not have secure means of web browsing until Apple issues its patch."
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/ap ... mg00000009

Apple support sited above says:
"...These issues apply to all modern processors and affect nearly all computing devices and operating systems. All Mac systems and iOS devices are affected, but there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time. Since exploiting many of these issues requires a malicious app to be loaded on your Mac or iOS device, we recommend downloading software only from trusted sources such as the App Store. Apple has already released mitigations in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 to help defend against Meltdown..."

And if one is still on El Cap???
Use Firefox rather than Safari?
but on the iPhone? what???
