I was wondering if anyone was thinking of getting a HomePod. Order from Friday for delivery 9th Feb. I see Curry's/PCW have it listed at £319 - no other price source yet. That is a little steep considering you need Apple Music to get the most from it.

I'm tempted because it is a gadget and for no other reason I can pin down. It isn't as if I can't use Siri on the phone/pad/watch/mac/TV already should the fancy take me.

I quite like the look of it. I don't have a music source in my front room so it could be a good addition. I have been told that you don't have to use Apple Music, it will access your own iTunes library to play music.

Sorry, yes, I was bundling iTunes with the streaming service. I'm the other way round - never bought from iTunes but now stream. Same thing and it should work, from what I read. I do have a library in iTunes locally but not in any cloud.

I'm slightly more inclined to get one than not but only by a slight margin.

I was a little surprised they opened for pre-orders several hours before 18:00.

You know what Apple are like.

I ordered mine after seeing your post as I’d forgotten about it.

I only found it at 15:00 by chance so jumped in early. I don't suppose it will be in short supply.

What is this with pre-orders? Do you have to re-order later. If not, you've ordered it.

No. Same as any so-called 'pre-odrer'. We have ordered a unit before the release date. Reserved stock. It will be shipped and debited and probably delivered on release day - job done. I'm guessing there will be plenty to go round, assuming the containers get here in one piece or don't fall in the ocean.

Yes, but Apple are being technical, I suppose. I'm not a fan of the term 'pre-order'. That means it is a 'before order', so it isn't an order, yet it is. There is b. all I can do about it so pre it is. Just allocating the container's contents before the ship docks. I imagine it might help them gauge demand and future requirements.

Looks like the only music HomePod will play is from Apple Music or music purchased through iTunes.

I've rang Apple to see if this is true but Apple guy couldn't confirm for definite but advised me to cancel my order.

Only about 20% of my music has been purchased through iTunes.

I have Apple Music and locally some 60+GB of MP3s, none of which were purchased from Apple. I'll let you know.

At one time, iTunes on my MBPr tried to upload them all to my online library so I could play from my iPhone, etc. I assumed it was a file copy to iCloud so I knocked that on the head pdq. I may be wrong and would like to hear a second opinion.

Something like this - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204926 - but I could be wrong.

I have just been told by someone I know via Twitter who works for Apple that you will be able to AirPlay music from your iTunes library to HomePod. So it will work but not in the way Apple intend it to.

I've cancelled my order and won't be re-ordering.
