Update just for the record.

It kept failing after a day or so. In the end, I scheduled the mini to restart every day at 04:00. Since then, TM has coped doing a day at a time. A workaround, not a solution, but one I can live with.

I'm just reading the Oct 2017 MacFormat. On page 72, I see comment that there is a "well known" bug that disrupts background activities, such as TM, which stop working. I did not know about it (otherwise I'd not have started this thread) so I searched on those terms. Lo and behold, there is such a thing, which has been about since El Cap. I now conclude that it wasn't my doing and it is macOS just not working. If it is so well known, I'd hope that Apple will have a fix by the time High Sierra rolls. I also hope I win the Euromillions multi-week rollover jackpot, but the odds are probably the same as TM getting fixed this year.

Case closed, I suppose.

Accepting that there is an ongoing background process action bug, it still came as a small surprise this morning that the mini got stuck trying to restart itself. Swift use the power button fixed that, but it shows that I should expect more bug-gery.

High Sierra has been on the mini for just over a week now. Backups have been running hourly without the scheduled daily reboot. It must have been a mac OS Sierra undocumented feature.

"undocumented feature" is much more effort to type than "bug"...

I'm retired. I have time to fill and a keyboard just waiting to be tapped. There's other things that I'd rather tap... but best we don't go into that.

Take up Gliding! Go visit the Black Mountains gliding club at Talgarth on a nice day with a westerly breeze you'll be made welcome! Big time waster on a summers day. http://www.blackmountainsgliding.co.uk

Or the Bristol and Gloucester club at Nympsfield, a great club with history and a great social life. Lots of characters. They have a bar. http://bggc.co.uk

It's not for me. Heights of any sort, even enclosed. I have always been that way. Now I'm disliking travel as I get older. Funny how the mind can do these things.

I'm not so keen on heights either, but I never glid. Who knows, I might enjoy it?

Heights are fine. Only last month I jumped out of a perfectly good aeroplane strapped to some guy wearing a parachute.

Nearest you, possibly Devon & Somerset Gliding Club http://www.dsgc.co.uk

Mind you, this time of year may not be the most bestest. Maybe March to September...

(There, I've done my topic-digression and evangelism bit for today) ;)

Oh yes they do! Not everywhere of course, but there is a strong movement in Paragliding to get people in wheelchairs in the air. I know the same applies in gliders too. If you can squeeze into the cockpit I'm sure they can manage.

Google search: Wheelchair Paragliding

Flyability - the BHPA's disability initiative

Solo takeoff at Bewaldeth
