Skype's next upgrade sounds/looks bloody awful.

I might write letters again.

I agree. Fortunately I see no mention of Mac. I only have it on Mac as I can see no need for it on iOS.

I'm using Version 7.29 (297) because I didn't like the update after that so rolled back. If they kill of what I'm using then I'll be out. I only use it to type at a few people because they killed of Messenger. I'm not having a cob yet but thanks for the heads up.

+1 from me too.

If only they could leave things alone, or just enter a "bug/security fix era" without changing the whole ethos of an application every few years.

So I'm running Skype v7.36(507), and checking updates says "that's the latest" - so I will stick with this version. Time to download the offline installer, and squirrel it away, methinks.

I reverted mine via Time Machine. Just dragged the old one back over the new and it worked. Phew.

I'm still using 6.19 which I think predates Microsoft's involvement, but in any case it looks much, much better. Of course I keep getting advice to update two or three times a day. The nagging is a shade tedious though.

I'm on v7.53 - and happy with it.
It's gotten to this version with small, incremental updates - with no really big changes for quite some time.

This new - horrendous IMHO - version is not yet released for Mac. But I know I will not be installing it. It's aimed at people a year or two younger than I am.

I'll just have to pay attention when the next update(s) become available - to see if it's another incremental update, or one to this major underhaul.

I don't get nagged. I've just been through Preferences settings and I can't see where I stopped it, if indeed I did. Maybe it became a manual action to check in this version.

I've just discovered Facebook has its own equivalent of Skype. Extremely easy to use.

I have a Facebook account - but never use it.

I've recently discovered Apple's FaceTime; I know - 'bout time, lad.
It's (video) quality is probably better than Skype's. Of course, it's Apple-device only.
But then, I don't speak to Windows users!

I only type to my kids, as per the old MSN. Other than that, I don't need Skype. It is the only platform we all have in common. Unfortunately, there's nothing else that can be used as a substitute client. I have looked. I could, at a very big stretch, get away with Messages, but only if absolutely necessary as it isn't really an equivalent app.

J'ai utilisé Skype pour tenir une conversation avec une belle femme française pour la dernière année et demi, et ça a été un engagement intéressant. Il n'y a plus que besoin de dire encore

As If I'd know ;)

My daughter just told me (via Skype type) that her Android 'phone has just had Skype "updated" and she isn't happy. No choice in the matter.

There is a preference to stop it auto updating, at least in my version. It doesn't stop it nagging me, but it doesn't do it by itself. I just have to be very careful not to press the wrong button at the wrong time - otherwise it will just go ahead!

I do understand why software people want to get everybody on the same page but a little bit of backwards compatibility and less aggressive promotion is a nicer way to conduct affairs I think.

This is my general preference in the version that I use, much nicer looking than this horrible modern stuff. At least I can see what is a button and what is not a button.
