My (the current) version also has the "Always keep Skype up to date" check box.
I've just unchecked it.
Thanks for that, Dave.

More or less the same options in my version but that is indeed where you turn off auto-updates. I couldn't find it when I looked yesterday but I know I had turned it off.

Whether it got better or not all depends on how you would use it I imagine.

The pressure is on.
I haven't checked the details yet, but this has appeared within an e-mail from Skype:

"We’ve noticed that you are, or previously were, using an older version of Skype that will be permanently retired. As a result, after Ju‍ly 1, 20‍17, you will no longer be able to sign in to these older versions of Skype. Recently updated or started using Skype on another device? Great, you can ignore this email.

To keep talking with your family and friends, please update Skype to the latest version. It only takes a few minutes and all your contacts and conversations will be right there when you sign in.

If you are unable to update, check our support site to see if Skype still supports your device and operating system. If it is no longer supported, you can still stay in touch with friends and family using Skype on other devices. The latest versions of Skype for all supported devices are available at https://www.skype.com/download. You can sign in using the same Skype account."

Since I'm actually on the latest version - recently updated - I think that I will not have to further update.
Not exactly sure how this relates to the contents of my original post. Perhaps it does not. If not, just info for all.

I've not had any email. Nothing has been diverted to spam. Good to be aware, thanks.

I - actually - also didn't get this e-mail. It came to my wife's account.
I wrote the post as if I had received it.

She regularly gets messages from Skype that I do not. I've never bothered to discover why that is so.

I have had genuine emails from Microsoft. One was when they discontinued MSN and pushed us to Skype. I think I also had one when I was using Windows that I needed to update the client or it would stop working. The only other was asking if I still wanted my 40GB fee OneDrive otherwise they'd drop it to something like 7GB. I'm happy not to hear from them when it isn't important. Now if only I could lose the 'phone calls from the "MS" Indian support criminals as easily.

Probably nothing to do with updates, but I'm suspicious. My contacts who have Skype on their Android 'phones and who had the enforced update now seem to vanish from my online contacts list. When I tell them, they say no, they were on. Another thing I get is occasionally, when going to start a type chat with people showing as online, I get the message "connecting" on an orange banner, turning to "connected" on green, but nothing seems to have changed. If it wasn't for my meddling kids, I'd lose it.

Looks like Skype stuffed with Cortana is finally on the horizon, starting in the U.S.

Glad I don't have it on iOS.
