I decided that I would like to record vinyl albums to iTunes/Apple Music so today I bought an Ion Compact LP record deck from Maplins. I connected it to my nearly new iMac, put a vinyl LP on the deck, lowered the needle and......nothing! A faint sound of music came off the spinning disc but nothing through my iMac's speakers.

I have tried all types of combinations in System Preferences>Sound but still no sound comes out of the iMac.

However, if I go into the EZ Vinyl/Tape Converter software that came with the new deck I can go into it as though I am about to record my LP and I get sound from the iMac, in fact it plays back whatever's on the deck perfectly! It also records fine from vinyl to iTunes.

Why can't I play from the deck direct through my iMac without using the recording software?

(P.S. What should the selected devices be in System Preferences>Input & Output in order to play vinyl from a deck?)

I have a Flexson VinylPlay deck which I use to play through Sonos but it also has a USB output for sound capture. Just to experiment, I plugged it into my MBPr. In System Preferences > Sound > Input I picked USB AUDIO CODEC (it is in caps, that isn't me shouting). In Output it is on Internal Speakers.

I put on The Animals and, of course, nothing was heard. I fired up Final Vinyl, set the input preference to USB AUDIO CODEC, then clicked the Mute off (the bottom left button) and out sang Eric and Co. OK, close that. Started QuickTime Player. File > New Audio Recording, slid the volume up a notch and there's Eric again. I didn't try Audacity.

You must have your recording software, or the ones mentioned above, running to get any sound. To get the sound over from the internal speakers to the external ones, you need to set Sound > Output to headphones (assuming you have them connected via mini-jack). You will not get any sound through without whichever software you prefer. That isn't how it works.

You bought the deck to capture the audio. The iMac isn't a hifi replacement.

Your original statement was "I would like to transfer some of my vinyl LPs to my Mac" and now you "want the turntable to play through any speakers without going through the EZ software". That is a completely different requirement and we probably would have said you can't do this straight off.

I'd guess Input = USB and Output = USB because that is where the deck and speakers are. In System Preferences and the software if the options exist.

If you capture the tracks as you originally intended then they'll just play as your digital files do now, but you will need all the tags and artwork correct to get the right order of play and artist/album sorting. That's down to you manually typing.
