My finder window has changed. The side bar has changed to just under Favourites :iCloud Drive, Desktop. Devices [Name] iMac. Shared: Airport Time Machine, then the coloured Tags.
I used to have Users, Applications, Documents and a few others. Something has been corrupted I think but not sure what. I can drag and drop to the side bar but I thought there was a quicker way of displaying folders.
I'm running El Capitan 10.11.6 - is it worth upgrading to High Sierra?

Usually Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and select/deselect what you want.

High Sierra is fine and looks the same so unless there's a reason not to go, you should think about. It isn't for me to say.

TotalFinder brings back colour (though not in dialogue windows :( ) and the traditional arrangement of what Finder windows used to look like.

Strangely, their screenshots don't seem to show a coloured sidebar, but my version (1.8) certainly has it.

Here I am - Sierra looks good! I have selected what I want in the side bar as well.
Thanks to all.

Maybe High Sierra next. Something for when you are bored.
