iMac (27- inch, late 2012) Version 10.12.6

Films and videos too dark to view. Tried a few different display profiles in display preferences but nothing helps.
Have tried VLC but can't get the video loaded into the app.

One time I had trouble with that, but dragging & dropping the video or TS_video folder on the VLC icon worked.

Tried dragging and dropping the video onto VLC but still no joy.

Where are these films from? Have they ever worked?

Not sure what you mean by "Where are these films from"
They were sent to me using email by the director of the film marked as, FilmFreeway,Powered by
JW Player 7.2.3

Have you tried JWPlayer? You might not have the right codec in VLC and so on. I'm not an expert. I asked about the source in case they were a download and in an unusual format.

Looks like JWPlayer is a html5 player which works in a web browser like flash player.

Have you tried dragging the video file into a browser window.
