Yesterday I dropped my Iphone and broke the front glass After looking Google I found someone local that could repair the phone, cost 85.00. As I am on call I need my phone so I went and had the phone repaired while I waited.
About an hour after the work was done I met a freiend who tells me that if I had taken it to an Apple store they would have replaced the phone immediatley free of charge, can this be right?

I doubt it, it was your fault.

Some mobile contracts have phone insurance, maybe you could have claimed on that. Though you'd probably have had to go through your phone supplier. But yes, Apple would only have repaired it free of charge if it was a hardware or manufacturing fault, which by dropping it clearly doesn't cover that.

I thought it was a rather bold claim to make for the very reasons stated, could not see why they would give me a new phone when I was stupid enpugh to drop the thing. I'm still smarting over the waste of 85.00.

iPhone 4 is essentially a GLASS phone and a cover is essential. Mine is an all enclosing leather wallet with a magnetic clasp. I trust that the £85 lesson will make things clearer to you. Harsh I know, but I am genuinely appalled at the number of naked iPhone 4s I see in harsh environments.

Or Vox, Apple should never have made a glass phone! I've had three friends have to replace the casing on their phones, and on one it smashed from a light bulb hitting it falling from the ceiling. However, if a lightbult can smash it, then anything can!

I've done the samevto my iPhone and the Apple Store quoted me £75. A friend dropped his phone at a football match when his team scored and he took it to the Apple Store and was given an option of paying for the repair or buying a new phone for the cost of the repair!! My understanding is that the Guru guys in the stores have authority to do such deals, but much depends on who you get and what they think of you!
