I don't know.
I don't use iCloud - and would like not to. It's not to my liking. So I thought that iTunes is still the way to synch things that I want synched.
You tell me.
I wouldn't need iTunes to purchase apps for the phone?

You can purchase apps from the App Store using your Apple ID. You can remove them and get them again later through the App Store so you don't really need to back them up locally.

App Store on iOS (iPhone and iPad (and tvOS)) has the same blue icon as on the Mac but have device specific items. Items bought on one iOS device is available for other you have yout Apple ID on, and a few leak over to Apple TV. Mac apps are Mac only.
I think that makes sense.

But I like to shop for iOS apps - and do just about everything else - from a full-size-monitor device: a computer (of which mine has 27 inches of glorious, prime, ocean-front real-estate).
Size matters - to me.

Well in that case use the app store section in iTunes but then you are tied to syncing with iTunes. If you use the Apps app on the iPhone you don't need iTunes. It's your call.

If you switch on 'Automatic Downloads' on iPhone then any apps* you purchase on Mac will automatically download onto your iPhone.
*compatible apps of course.

Okay; I'm getting there. Maybe.
If I don't use iTunes to synch stuff (not just apps), how do I "synch" some of my photos (and I don't use "Photos", some of my contacts, some videos, etc.? Or is "synching" not possible?
I've seen an app, Waltr, which can be used to drag-and-drop whatever (not contacts) to a phone.
Does anyone use that, or similar?
In case you haven't realized it by now, I'm not an experienced phone user.

Are your objections to using Photos going to be the same objections to using other syncing services such as Dropbox, Flikr, Google Photos etc.?
