I was trying to connect my iPhone 7 to my iTunes library only to find out apple has made my 2006 iMac obsolete with iOS 10.
I have over 20'000 songs that I can't access on my phone anymore. I will be returning my iPhone 7 and buying and old iPhone that has iOS 9 on it.
This should be made clear. It was probably in the small print, but with apple only giving you a 15 minute appointment when buying the iPhone, they don't give you the time to read the small print.
Gary.

Is it just that you need the latest iTunes on the Mac?

I have the latest iTunes that my mac can use. How hard is it to update all the iTunes to allow iOS 10. If it was made clear that updating would stop me having access to my 20'000 songs then I would not have updated or bought anew iPhone.

Well, this topic got my attention! Sorry to stray a bit from the topic, but...
Please forgive my stupidity. I am just in the throes of committing to purchasing our first iPhone. We have several Macs - 2 running Snow, 1 running Mavericks - several running OS older than those!
Isn't it possible to use the phone (Google maps, translate, all the web stuff a traveler might need/use/want) without updating our Mac's iTunes? (We are not iTunes downloaders - our iTunes is old and full of 60GB of classical music not purchased from iTunes, and it lives happily on the computer where it will stay with no need for it to go onto the phone)
Thanks in advance for any help, advice you offer.

You really only need itunes if you want to put music on your phone. You can download all the apps directly on the phone as you can if you purchase music directly from your phone.
My problem id that I have over 20'000 songs on my itunes library that I can no longer transfer to my phone as I cant download the latest version of itunes. I still have all my apps and stuff like that so dont worry. I was probably being a little dramatic with my headline.

I'm sure there are other applications which will allow you to transfer music to your iPhone. I'm not at home at the moment so cannot check my iMac for what I have installed. A Google search may throw up some alternatives.

Gary, try iMazing, (imazing.com), it will transfer all your music to your iPhone 7.
