First post here! When my iPhone goes to sleep, it shows a black screen. That's expected. I seem to remember with my old iPhone, 4s, that black screen would show if I had a message waiting to be read.
I keep missing messages because I have to hit the home button to see if I have one.
Any suggestions?

You need to check how your notifications are set. Settings ▸ Notifications ▸ Messages. You will need "Show on Lock Screen" switched on. Messages will then flash up when received but the screen will then go dark again after a few seconds to save battery life.
