Yes, I had that on my iPad earlier (posted in iOS 11 thread). My iPhone was fine. I sent off a feedback note to Apple from my beta feedback app and two hours later, it was sorted. Not that I'm saying the feedback either got there, was read or was acted upon but it works now. I guessed it would be more widespread than just li'l ol' me.

I’ve seen it just after updating. Not happened since.

Is it possible to download – but not to install – apps now? Or does everything that one downloads from the app store now get installed on one's iDevice?

Don't update to iTunes 12.7 and the app store is still there (for now at least). You can download apps to iTunes on a mac and sync to your idevice as and when you wish.

^ As I understood it, you need 12.7 for iOS 11 compatibility. Are you saying otherwise? I sometimes get the wrong end of the metaphorical stick.

Using iTunes, I installed iOS11 on my iPad Pro and synced before updating to iTunes 12.7. I didn’t try installing any Apps though as you could see all the Apps installed but it didn’t show the Dock correctly - the recent items weren’t showing.
I had long ago stopped installing Apps through iTunes on a regular basis so I decided to move to 12.7. I only really used it as a back up place but have recently downloaded iMazing Mini for that.
