Hi all, over on the Technical section Leewave and MacBiter have been talking about Fan Control on Macs. Got me thinking. What about iPads and iPhones how do they cool? I doubt there are fans in them, if there are they must be as thin as a razor blade. How do they cool down? Or don't they get hot enough to have to cool down?

They remain cool by using low power so they don't generate more heat than may be dispersed through simple conductance.
I remember back in the day when early Intel/AMD chips had no fans. I think the 486 might have been the last to cope without cooling. I recall my 486-DX66 was fanless but that is by the by.

The only time I have had a hot iPhone is when I was using it outside during a heatwave. Even then, it didn't put itself into "cool down mode". I've never had an iPad get too hot. Anyway, you could always chuck water on an iPhone or iPad if it did get too hot.

iOS devices don't have hard drives or other moving parts so they don't need cooling
