I'm not sure how it happens, but occasionally Safari appears as an overlay on top of another app (narrow, on the right of the screen). There is no way I can dismiss it: - deliberately launching Safari it opens as normal but there's still this tab overlaying it - there's no X on the overlay to close it - swiping to see all app thumbnails Safari isn't there so I can't quit and relaunch - swiping up, it doesn't move
So far I've had to reboot to get rid of it but surely there is an easier way? Googling the problem I can only find stuff on split screen, but this isn't split screen.

What I normally do when this happens is to tap and hold the menu bar at the top of the floating window and then drag it into split screen mode and swipe it away.
I’m not sure how it actually does this instead of going into split screen mode. It appears to be completely random to me.

Sounds like "Slide Over" to me. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207582Mother inadvertently invoked this a month ago and I had to fix it.

It is completely hit and miss if it opens as a slide over or a split view. And it's completely hit and miss getting rid of it.
