When I turn the ringer off, using the little switch on the side of the phone, there is a temporary notification that the ringer is off (silent mode is on). Great.
Is there any way for that notification to be displayed as long as the ringer is off?

The very first time that I used that switch, I forgot that I had done it. And for some days, I did not receive calls, and thought that the phone was broken! It still makes me nervous whenever I use that function, but I do wish to use it from time-to-time.

I do not wish to use "do not disturb" as an alternative in all situations. DND works well in some circumstances, but isn't as handy to use in others.

Nope, sorry. I'm afraid you have to use your eyes and check the switch. :)

Do you have vibration turned on? At least that way, your iPhone will vibrate when a call or message comes through.

Settings ▸ Sounds & Haptics ▸ Vibrate on Ring

Well, I really didn't think so. Apple wouldn't use the real estate for the notification.
The problem is that before I "use my eyes", some other part of my anatomy needs to kick in!

Yes - I have Vibrate on Ring enabled.
Thanks.

At least you know that the silent button works.

I’ve had my iPhone ring when on silent on three separate occasions. Once was just after I had lowered a coffin into a grave. Not a joke!

You didn't initially think that the phone that was ringing belonged to the deceased? :D ;)

It's just that I was having a Monty-Python-moment:
I pictured a phone ringing in that situation, and everyone reaching into their pockets - including the deceased :!: :o :P :D

Hope I'm not offending. Not my intention.
Monty Python: it was their intention.
