I am about to change my cell-phone service company. It's been many moons since I've done this.

Is there a ”universal” answer to this question – meaning the answer is independent of what service I have now?:
Are my contacts saved on the SIM-card, or are they saved in the phone’s memory?

What is lost when a new card is inserted? Can a card be archived (in a card-reader)?
Will I not lose anything as long as I back-up my phone before switching cards?

Thanks.

This is a copy/paste from a reputable site:

Unlike some other mobile phones, the iPhone's SIM is only used to store customer data like phone number and billing information.

The SIM on the iPhone can't be used to store contacts or other user data. You also cannot back up data to or read data from the iPhone's SIM. Instead, all data that would be stored on the SIM on other phones is stored in the iPhone's main storage (or in iCloud), along with your music, apps, and other data.

That means that swapping a new SIM into your iPhone won't affect your access to the address book and other data stored on your iPhone.

Your Contacts are - or should be - in iCloud as well as on your devices.

Not true. I don't use iCloud for that.
I do, however, back up my contacts (via usual backup software) and phone (via iTunes).
