I recently got a HTC Desire HD. It's great being able to access your Facebook and Twitter streams as well as pick up your email. Beside that, text and calls, what else do people do with their phones? I'd like to use it to it's full potential. Any ideas? Thanks - John.

They are great for stopping pub tables rocking

Mobile phones are good for doing a bit of this or a bit of the other, but they in no way replace a camera or a desktop/laptop where a biggish screen is required to work without eyestrain.

Music is an obvious choice for the iPhone. Does the Desire have any music option? Gaming is another big thing on iOS as well.
I use quite varied apps such as Convertbot which is a conversion app for pretty much anything. Volume, area, currency, fuel, mass to name a few. There is an app to sync for your Dropbox account, one for Sky Sports News and another for Sky Sports Score Centre. There are weather apps, note taking apps with alarm functions, Scrabble type games, Dictionary apps, Sat Nav apps and many more. There are all available from the App Store.
Is there an App Store thing for the HTC?

Mike, I think I'll stick with beer mats for the shaky pub tables. Chris, the convertor is a good idea, as is the dictionary. I do have dropbox installed - I'm a long time user and love it. Weather, notes, alarms come as standard on Android. They have the Android market where there are thousands of apps. Just thought people could suggest a few handy ones. Thanks.

I forgot the obvious thing - photography. What is the camera like on the Desire?
I have quite a few photography apps on my iPhone with Hipstamatic being far and away my favourite. Photoshop Express, Instagram, Photobucket, Flickr to name but a few more.

I've got an HTC Desire. While my wife and I were on holiday I took a few photos with it and just hoped they might be clear enough to show where we had been. Wrong...the photos were stunning!! I have blown some up to 7 x 5 and asked some people to judge those few photos with some others I had printed from a Fuji compact and almost with exception they couldn't tell the difference. The colours were very vibrant. Pretty much the same apps that are available on Apple are in some way or another available on Android. Some apps are by the same developers and some are different developers but doing pretty much the same thing. I use mine for doing e-mails on the go, booking appointments with customers, Twitter (I use and app called Twicca for that), weather apps, Met Office Rain Radar, RAC Traffic reports, London A-Z, Tube Map with live updates, Train Times, various travel apps and quite a few others I can't remember right now.I can probably put a more complete list on here if anyone is interested but what I use might not be what other people want. A number of the built in apps are good as well. For example Footprints whereby you can take a photo of a location, it will use GPS to get all the details of the place and then you can add your own notes. Therefore you gradually build up a database of useful places you visit...even if it's only pubs.... And of course there is Google Maps along with built in Sat Nav...and it's been very accurate the few times I've used it. Just out of interest, and i'm not trying to start a war or fight or arguments on here, but the HTC Desire has just been voted the best phone of the year by Mobile Choice (which is mostly voted for by the readers) and What Mobile (which is mostly voted for by the industry). One complaint that seemed to come across was that the iPhone/iPod Touch interface is looking a little tired and dated, although I'm sure Apple will respond by making something better looking, faster etc. as they always do. From a personal point of view I find the HTC Desire slightly more responsive than the iPhone but of course everyone will have their own opinions of what is best. If we all liked the same thing it would be a very boring world.

I haven't had a chance to really test the 8 Mp camera yet. Just finding my way around it still. I know it won't stand up against the Nikon, but I'm still expecting to get some nice shots from it. I'll post some when I get some I like.

Thanks sportsman. I'd be interested to see a list of your apps if thats possible. As said earlier, just looking for some decent apps out of the thousands that's there.

I don't find the iOS interface dated at all. But having said that I also haven't looked at any of the new smartphones since I got my 3GS so maybe I'm not best qualified to say.

@Jer1ch0 I agree that the camera wouldn't compare to a DSLR but nevertheless it takes more than adequate shots. Better than any phone camera I've had before. I haven't tried the video yet though. These are the apps that I have got, apart from those pre-loaded on the phone. The in-built onesmay differ slightly depending on what company you use as I believe that some of the companies add their own apps. All of these are free apart from three of them I think. When you look them up on the market you will know for sure. I don't know if you already know but http://www.androidzoom.com is a good place for looking at apps and each app gives you a link to the developers website. The only thing you want to be aware of before you download is what services the apps use. Some say they can use SMS and make phone calls. I have never downloaded one of these yet. Don't be worried about ones that say they don't let the phone sleep. All it means is that it constantly works in the background e.g. news apps. Ok..here at last are my apps: Jorte (PIM/ Calendar) Twicca Shop Around (very good) Google Tasks Organiser Tennis 2010 (score updates from various pro tournaments) Pocket Informant j2Cal (Calendar app) Memoires My Places Walkin London Tasks Check It Off Handy Where I Am Galaxy (radio app that can get almost any radio station in the UK. Very clear sound) Aldiko Book Reader (Better than Kindle) Daily Expense Manager Wapedia Google Earth Train Times uk My Tracks (GPS for walkers) Google Sky Map Catch Notes XE Currency (Foreign Currency converter, very good and constantly updates) Tennis Math (for scoring live tennis matches) London A-Z Mini Atlas Weather Bug London Evening Standard Smart Grocery Digital Recipe Sidekick Baltimore Orioles Tweets New England Patriots Cashew Password Safe Lite Shuffle (GTD like app) Mobisle Notes uNote RAC Traffic They should keep you going for a while. They are the best that I have found in their particular field but it should give you some ideas to get started. If you have any queries then just let me know.

Thanks sportsman. Theres a few there for me to check out. Some of the apps are already covered by my Desire HD running the latest Android 2.2. Peep (pre-installed) does for my Twitter needs. Places comes as standard as does weather, radio, google maps. I will check out some of the calendar apps, tasks, etc stuff as I don't think the installed app does everything I want. I use 1password app (free) because I use it on the Macbook and my Win desktop as well. ConvertPad (ad supported) will convert anything including currency. Sundroid free is great for knowing sun rise/set, moon rise/set times. Flickr free is good but a bit slow. 3G watchdog is good for keeping an eye on your data usage. The search is never ending.

I used Peep to begin with but I don't use Facebook, although my wife does but she uses Twicca and Facebook instead of Peeps, so I changed to Twicca. I know the weather comes as standard but one of the apps also has a news feed built in as well. It's called News and Weather. I think I forgot to put it on my list earlier. I also missed off Convert Pad which I agree is very good. I have found Galaxy to be better than the built-in radio. Weatherbug is very good as well. I like the graphics however on the inbuilt home screen weather, especially if it forecasts rain or snow flurries, as it did today. As you say though you have plenty to look through to keep you busy for a while. I think you would agree with me though that HTC seem to be making cracking good phones.
