Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions, and please keep them coming. I'm getting some very good ideas and getting a much better idea of what's available and which cameras I might have overlooked have real potential.

Well... If you are looking to buying new then nikons D3000 or canons 1000D are nikons and canons current starter SLR. But both go over the £300 mark.
Sony alpha 230 is a good one, has a very very good guide mode on it and is less than £300 (we sell it for £279 I think, but we're a store and probably more expensive than online).
Does it have to be full SLR or cold it be a bridge camera? Take a look at the panasonic FZ45, 24x optical zoom along with some manual overrides.
However, an SLR will be better, even a second hand one - all of the above suggestions would be great!
