Yes, they are a major problem out there, nearly wiping out a lot of the local wildlife.

It's much the same in New Zealand with introduced species. Out walking in the countryside, the sound of birdsong is virtually absent. Many, many years ago rabbits were introduced. When they got out of hand, some bright spark decided to introduce stoats/weasels to get rid of the rabbits. They decided that the local bird life, who had never seen a stoat, were an easier option.

There was very little understanding of ecology in New Zealand and Australia early on and many mistakes were made in trying to use one animal against another, usually resulting in chaos.

One of the best positive stories in this area I've heard is from using a special breed of dog, a Maremma which traditionally was used to guard sheep from wolves, and today these are employed to guard Little Penguins from foxes just off the southern coast of Australia. The dogs have been doing it for about ten years now, and despite problems to begin with, the handlers have managed quite a success as the Little Penguin population has recovered and prospered.
