I have a 2014 Passat with a DSG gearbox. The Manual states that the stop/start system should be turned off when towing my caravan, but doesn't say why.
I sent a query to VW and they said that it's due to the extra weight and load that the car is pulling. I can't see the logic in that. Why should the extra weight and load make a difference?
Can anyone elaborate?

After reading up on it... assuming it's NOT flatbed towing, then the vehicle may decide to start itself when being towed... or so it seems to me.

Sorry, that doesn't make sense either.

I'm wondering how much steering & especially braking power you have if the engine isn't running?
How much power do the trailer lights use?

Caravans are hardly aerodynamic. Maybe you are using more engine power to tow the slab. It could be a power use/drain thing. I'm also basing that on when I had to tow caravans (hateful things - I used to have to tow some).

I turn off the auto stop/start on our DSG most times anyway, mainly because in heavy traffic it's a PITA and I would imagine it's shortening the life of the battery and starter as well

Supposedly cars with auto stop/start have heavier duty Batteries & Starters to handle the fact... they'd still last longer if it was off it seems.

My Citroen stop/start actually cuts the engine out at 6mph or less, so if you're slowing down and the engine cuts out at 6mph towing a caravan then that might cause a problem. I don't know if VW stop/start is the same though.
Just had a look at wiki and the VW seems to cut out 4 seconds after you have stopped.

The start/stop feature is the worst 'feature' ever devised, and potentially dangerous.
