I haven't done a long distance mail line train journey for well over 20 years. I'm taking the train down to Southampton in a couple of months, so went on line for fares. I found the following for a particular day: 09:30 £40.50 10:20 £111.10 10:40 £38.50 11:20 £77.20 Now I can understand peak and off peak, but £38.50-£111.10! Where's the logic in that? Probably Cross Country, though all the companies are the same.
Sometimes I travel GWR from Didcot Parkway to Taunton. Last year I chose first class because it was only £4 dearer, this year the price has rocketed. Std Class, 09.42 is £8.60, 09.56, £28.45, First Class, £93.40.
We've Senior Rail Cards, so train travel is reasonable.
