Post subject:  The General Election ... why

I miss our friendly chats about current affairs and the best way to run a country.

So, does anyone know why we are having a General Election?

Seriously, why?

I'm certain that no one, apart from totally devoted, hard core zealots, want the Labour Party to form a Government. No one knows who or what they are any more. Even they don't know what to believe.

The Lib Dems will not be playing a crucial role in forming a Coalition Alliance and will remain a phantom apparition, appearing only at a full moon, then crumbling into dust as soon as dawn breaks.

The Conservatives clearly expect to swagger to Victory as the only sane choice in a world filled with paranoid, screaming 24 hour hate from every TV set and internet news feed and thereby finally enforce the unelected and now rapidly expiring UKip sole policy of leaving the EU.

Which is where they are now.

Why does Mrs T. M. May feel need to drive us all to binge drinking and utter indifference about the very job she already has and without wishing to point out the obvious, the important task that she, as Prime Minister is expected to do; leave the EU.

Is she looking for an excuse to get out of it?

From across the pond, I'd say, as here, they run elections to make a portion of the populace feel they have a say in what goes on, & secondly so they can point to the outcome when any blame starts popping up. :(

It's been called because of the current MPs under investigation for election fraud. If they are all found guilty, they would lose their status as an MP and then the Conservatives wouldn't have a majority and the Queen would have to ask other political parties to form a coalition government.

Thanks BDAqua - We know why we have Elections as such - It's this particular one, at this particular time I'm querying.

As Jonah has suggested, they may be a more cynical reason than the democratic process in action - but we don't know whether the CPS will take action regarding MP's and their spending practices.

Anyway... more input M4Mer's please.

There is nothing wrong with an election, if there was only less time allocated to coverage on TV. The news channels and bulletins are full of it while there's other stuff going on in the country, let alone world. It is the constant talking of bollocks/half-truths by politicians*, mixed with the speculative comments of pundits and misleading polls that make me wilt. It was great last Thursday when there was no coverage while local elections were held but we were punished for it with results marathons for the next day.

Sometimes I start typing and don't know when to stop, so now, I will.

* I include all parties, but some just whine so much more than others.

What annoys me is the amount of airtime UK*P get despite the fact they have next to no MPs and are now a complete irrelevance given that they lost so many seats in the County Council elections.

Our county council elections went almost unnoticed in our neck of the woods. We got the polling card and one leaflet from the sitting councillor. Only when we went to vote did we see (from the voting paper) that there were four candidates. If they can't be bothered to tell us they are standing, why would we vote for them? Was no great surprise that the well-respected sitting councillor was re-elected with a much larger majority.

The county's three UKIP councillors were booted out. Let's face it - UKIP has got what it wanted and really IS irrelevant now, so I agree with you. It always was irrelevant in councils

As for "enjoying" it, I've voted No... We've just given up watching TV news and we haven't bought a paper in years but I do pick up a Metro on the bus occasionally.

Edit Deleted - inappropiate...

I just had the first door knocker person of this election. I wouldn't do it on behalf of any party, so well done all who do. Down here (Gower Constituency) the Conservatives won for the first time in yonks by 27 votes. We had a boundary change just before and I'd venture that it made the difference. It used to be Labour by thousands. It will be interesting to see what happens this time. I wonder whether the MRLs are running this time?

Well, not a lot of take up on this thread but thanks for the input.

... less than 3 weeks to go.

Perhaps as we get to Zero Day things'll heat up.

Just to rattle the cage gently, the more I see and hear the party leaders down here, the more I think it might have been a good idea for the SNP to put up candidates in the rest of the UK (do we have a smilie for tongue firmly in cheek?)

A friend in America said he wanted a ballot form that offered an option of "None of the above" :)
