My brother-in-law has a Nikon D610 with a Tamron f2.8 24-70 lens and it got a dunking today. It was inside a waterproof bike pannier and a bottle of water inside wasn't closed properly. The camera was lens down in a carry case and as far as we can see there is no noticeable damage to the body but there appears to be a slight water ingress in the front of the lens. We took the battery out, took off the lens and opened all the covers as soon as we found it. We tried turning it on after it had dried out for a while, (not my idea, i know) and the first time it had some kind of error message which i think was "OF 3.0" on the screen but then the second time it appeared to boot ok.

Does anyone have any experience of Nikon repairs? Is it advisable to try a local camera shop or is it a return to Nikon case? I guess it's going to be a few hundred Euro to repair.

I've only ever used Nikon for repairs.

Having said that, after the repair I found out it was actually repaired at a place in Newcastle under Lyme, only 20 miles away from my home. I had to send it to Nikon down south somewhere who then sent it to Newcastle, who fixed it and sent it direct to me.

The camera was repaired perfectly and was completely cleaned inside and out during the repair process.

Well if you could spare the time you could always get a big bag of rice and immerse the camera parts in that and leave it for a couple of weeks. Or buy a lot of silica gel packets and use them in a large sealed plastic bag.

… Not forgetting to take the batteries out immediately …

DarrenG 'The MacFixer' said that rice doesn't do anything to fix water damaged iPhones so I imagine that the same would apply to a Nikon.

Ok BBW, I'm never wrong, I'm just less right on occasions. :)

It works especially well when I'm refereeing football matches.
