This is a young female orangutan at the Sepilok Borneo rescue and rehabilitation centre that I visited. There are a lot of them there and they all have tattoos so that they can be easily identified. This was feeding time, so all the tourists were gathering to watch, I have a number of photos but that's the one I chose since it is at least not too blurry. They are rescued and fed and encouraged in gradual degrees to venture further out into feeding stations further into the jungle so that they will eventually return of their own choice. There is a big problem with their habitat disappearing due to extensive palm oil plantations and logging and capture of young ones by the people to serve as pets.

I stayed one night at the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge and we did a night walk into the forest, and a river cruise in the daytime. I didn't do it via TripAdvisor! It was all adhoc via the tourist office at Kota Kinabalu. There was another (very wet) river trip into the Beaufort wetlands. Plus some scuba-diving in very warm water from a small island off Kota Kinabalu.

Dinner at the Sepilok cafeteria! Very nice too.

Thanks for the further info, Dave.
Always interesting to read about how animals are cared for.
(Did you happen to see any of the Nat Geo? TV show on the Photo Ark?
Wonderful photos of species endangered and on the brink here: https://www.joelsartore.com/photo-ark/
[BTW - did you receive my Aug 3 PM?]

Back to my earlier question - does anyone know how to delete pix once uploaded to pi.gy?
I didn't bother in my test to check "delete in x number of days" - then it would be deleted from the place to which you posted it as well - sometimes desirable. But what if I want to delete the photo??

All I could find in their very limited info says:
Quote:
?: Will my images disappear after x amount of time?
Nope, storing files the way we do is relatively cheap.
So your image will remain unless it breaks our AUP.

How were the sautéed caterpillar larvae, Dave?
And served on a bed of earthworms. Yum.

Yes it was - okay.

Actually that was vegetables and noodles and indeterminate pieces of protein (grey bits). The "caterpillars" were actually crunchy vegetables and it was reasonably tasty. It also came with a rather nice fruit juice smoothie. There was warm torrential rain outside, which died off later - just in good time to go and see the feeding time for the orangutans at 3 pm, fortunately.

Mrs H, I did reply to your August 3 PM. I didn't reply to the August 4 PM because there was nothing to add. PM me again or better yet, email if you want to continue the conversation! Sorry, I'm not being obtuse.

I think your question about deleting images from that web image hosting site is that you cannot. You don't even have to log into it and I think once you have closed the webpage, the image links are no longer visible. It's a post-and-forget service, it appears. It does also mention the possibility of being a user as opposed to a guest, but how you become a user is not obvious to me. If you were a "user" there may may be additional controls - but, who knows?

If you are leery about posting images on the web and want to have control over them, including deleting them, this would not be the place you would use. It's a cheapo (zero cost) freebie service. No control offered. It doesn't have a deleted after x number of days function! It's just saying, if you read the text below, that it doesn't delete them - they're up there permanently. That is a bonus to some people. Again, if you don't like your images being on the web permanently, or want to retain copyright, don't put them there. As far as I can see there isn't a search function, so unless somebody knows the actual link, they would never be found.

Quote:
Deleted after X amount of time: guest - no, user - no.

Can I donate or buy ad-space?
Nope, it's free and shall remain free without any costs or degrading by ads.

Will my images disappear after x amount of time?
Nope, storing files the way we do is relatively cheap.
So your image will remain unless it breaks our AUP.

Can I upload xyz?
As long as it's not illegal it's fine; that means no CP.

Can I use this as a CDN
Yes, we're not short on bandwidth nor storage.

Does this service compress images?
No, but JPEG's might lose about 0.5% of the quality thanks to CloudFlare.
Other than that your image stays just like you uploaded it.
But we do strip the comments and GPS details for security & privacy reasons.

I don't watch National Geographic, don't know about what you mentioned.

I think you are right, but I am sure when I uploaded my test photo it gave 3 options - delete never, delete in 10 days, delete in 30 days.

We don't watch Nat Geo either. It was on our Public broadcasting system network, the one where we get all the BBC productions. The photo ark is described in the link I gave above and here: https://www.joelsartore.com/photo-ark/
and here https://www.joelsartore.com/gallery/the-photo-ark/28/ for example.

Joel Sartore is photographer who is attempting to photo all of the endangered species on the brink before they disappear forever. The TV show documented him taking some of the 6886 photos over the past 25 years.

I've always been troubled by this sort of thing:
"By downloading an image or copying other user-generated content (UGC) from PostImage, you agree that you do not claim any rights to it. The following conditions apply: ..." but once you post a photo online you pretty much sign off ownership, even if you've copyrighted it.

That is protecting your rights - if it's your photograph. That is saying that anybody who downloads your picture does not own it. It does not deny you your rights as the owner of the photograph.

But if you care about certain pictures you could always put a watermark on them to make them less useful and less desirable to re-use. A low resolution photograph is not that valuable by itself anyway. I suppose you could include your own contact information if you want to sell any prints etc.

Maybe you could promote your own photography business that way! You might make loadsa dosh! You could even make it a live link to your own image sales website and with suitable text on the image itself.

I didn't see any time limits on the pi.gy website, but Postimages does have a dialogue regarding time limits.

It also has a removal link available.
