iCloud seems pretty straightforward - that's where I've got my Contacts, Safari settings, and Keychain, and it all dovetails neatly with the new iPad.
However, I'm not sure how I use Dropbox with the iPad. Even if I can work out how, there are Mac OS X Library symlinks in there which I don't want it to sync to the iPad - it includes Safari and Contacts which I also have copies of in Dropbox, but also large folders e.g. which hold my Journler AppSupport data, which I couldn't use on iPad.
So my question is two-fold:
1. Now that I've downloaded the Dropbox app to iPad, how do I go about setting it up, and...
2. How do I exclude items so that there is automatic sync between them and the Mac, but not with iPad?

If you have iOS 11, you can also use the new Files app. I don't use Dropbox (I'm with OneDrive) but likely you just log in using your DB credentials.

Open the iOS app and sign in with the same details as on your Mac.
As for the second problem, not a clue.
And for information - at the moment, you cannot use the new Files app with Dropbox if you set up a security passcode on the iOS app. I’ve asked Dropbox why and they just told me to “stay tuned for further updates” and didn’t bother actually answering my question.

I doubt it will download because of space. Imagine if you had loads of music and video, where would it all go? OneDrive opens the cloud end and you see those folders and files which you can edit or download individually. DB wouldn't be different, I bet.
I didn't know about Files and DB.

I have about 6Gb in my Dropbox account. Everything syncs to iPad and this is how much space it takes up on my iPad Pro.

Unless you save it for offline use...

Never knew that! But then I don't use an iPad. Well try with a test text file to see if your supposition is correct.

Thanks for that.
I also found that "Hey Siri" doesn't work despite being turned on and voice trained, but Siri works fine if I hold down the Home button. The "expert" in my local Apple Store concluded it wasn't a hardware problem (sigh, I'd already worked that out) and I should book in for an appointment with the Genius Bar.
SUBSEQUENTLY I have Googled and eventually found out that on 5th gen iPads, Hey Siri only works if it's linked to a power supply. Oh yeah. Like everybody's going to be able to do that when they're out and about...
