https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Apple-iMac-i ... SwCmNZ09o1I could retire my present machine (from the same period) and use this instead - with 16GB of RAM, 1TB HDD, & 128GB SSD, it would serve me well. How much would any of you bid on it, and is there anything that would put you off? (I already have a separate USB optical drive as the one in my Mac doesn't work).

It looks like a capable Mac and with an SSD so you can make a fusion drive of course, the question is though, how much will it go for? How far are you willing to go to to get it? It seems rather similar to the one you already have.

Looks good, only thing I can say is be sure to run MacsFanControl to especially keep the GPU cool.

Lee - it is rather similar to my existing one I agree. But it's an i7 rather than i5, has twice the size of HDD, and has the SSD fitted already in place of the optical drive (something I was contemplating having doing anyway). I reckon the cost of doing that to mine would be a few hundred pounds, at least, including labour, plus the inconvenience of being without my computer for a few days. So I was thinking a price somewhere between £400 to £500, what do you think?
BD - thanks for the advice. Should I also get that for my existing Mac?
BTW it's currently on £72 with 3 ½ days left to run - and 16 bids, so there will be fair competition at the end, I guess.

Use sniping software. Just a suggestion. I use Jbidwatcher and mine is set for eight seconds before close. Mac2Sell suggests something like £970 for this with a fusion drive with 1 TB hard drive. Once you've bought it you have to pay £25 for transport and then you have to sell your existing one and that will be another source of hassle perhaps. It's a toss up isn't it? Whether you think the improvement is worth the effort. And you know what eBay is like, the price 5 minutes before close will not be what it actually closes for! To say that it is £72 3½ days before closing means nothing. PS. I would fit your SSD in your existing one for nothing except a pint of beer but I live nowhere near you! Then all you have to do is pay for a bigger hard drive and a small SSD.

Dave, I really do appreciate your offer, but as you say, we live far apart!
How recent is the advert you quote above? I only ask, because if it's a year or two old, the value will have decreased by now. The £25 delivery is neither here nor there, and nor is the lack of original box, manuals etc.
As for mine, I wouldn't sell it. It's been in continuous use for 6 years and apart from the optical drive, it's fine. I'd stow it as a backup "just in case", while it's still working well. Maybe I should be prepared to pay more than £500, which might be more realistic for a computer totally without guarantee.

It wasn't an advert, it was Mac2sell today's quoted current value but it seems rather inflated to me for an old computer. I don't know what it's worth. You decide what you want to pay, but with sniping software you only have to make that decision once - it will buy if it's within your price range at the minimum price you can get above the next bidder.
I use that fan software which is free but I only really need it on my MacBook Pro because that's always running a little hot so I've set it to start at 84° since that usually keeps the fans at low tickover and build up to maximum at 100°C. Right now doing very little it's already 65°C. Both my Mac Minis seem to be well under those temperatures even when doing some heavy encoding - they don't seem nearly so stressed. They are set to ramp up at 70°C up to maximum at 90°C. Right now the 2012 Mini is encoding with Handbrake, all CPUs are fully engaged but the temperature is still only 75° and the fans have gone from 1800 idle to about 2250 rpm
I guess you want the 2011 model because it's the last one that can run Snow Leopard!

Yes that's what I originally thought, I added that as a postscript a little bit tongue in cheek!
Anyway if you can get it at a reasonable price that computer seems like a good bet for you, good luck.

The answer to your last question is really up to you. He's not including the optical drive, (a down point) the cost of a new 128 GB SSD is 50 or 60 quid; fitting it costs ((?)), the cost of the tools and caddy and a little bit of time - or professional fitting including X pounds an hour for labour is undefinable.
Not everybody would think the lack of an optical drive is an asset, some people regard modified computers as worth less, or would never buy a computer that somebody has tinkered with, but others think differently. It really depends on an individual's value judgement, doesn't it?
There is no Apple keyboard with it but then perhaps the Logitech is equally okay.
I know you don't expect hard and fast answers, because there aren't any, I would suggest you just wait until the last hour and then see what other people have bidded it up to, and then decide if you want to make a higher bid. Sniping software allows you to remain out of the bidding war until the last possible moment.
y***1(47) is leading at the moment with automatic bids, and has obviously decided on a value - but if someone outbid him, he might add a little bit more. You know these things are imponderable.
And if you wanted to run Snow Leopard natively it is the last iMac that can do it.

Bung in a sniping bid at 450 quid. Or some other figure! I'm sure you know that you don't pay what you bid - you only pay the next increment above where the other guy leaves off. I'll be watching it on Saturday evening to see what happens, good luck.

Yes, I'll go about that, or perhaps a bit more, and go in with 7 seconds to go. (My strategy rather than snipeware). It's over £200 already (a***a) with a day and a half to go, and I expect it to be around £300 tomorrow morning. We'll wait and see...
If a***a turns out to be a dealer, then I have an advantage over him/her as I don't have any profit margins to consider.

Well, I "won" the iMac... Here is a screenshot of the bidding: I've sent a couple of messages to the seller (no response yet..) saying I'm prepared to make an offer, but if I don't hear back from him, I will raise a report and investigation with eBay. What do you guys think?
